Dear AGA:

I wanted to tell everyone that my dad has decided to move back to the beach for good. WOOF, WOOF! I’m very happy. Also, thanks to my family at AGA. This great adventure I’m about to embark on, would not be possible without your help.

P.S. My dad is awesome! He takes me on a lot of walks; so much walking that it has even helped my dad lose some extra pounds. We love to talk during car rides and I also enjoy watching TV with him. If you watch really close, you may even catch my TV debut.

I love everyone at AGA.

Life According to Crosby

Dear Diary,

I know it’s been a while, but I have been very busy spending time with my new family since they adopted me back in June. You wouldn't believe how fantastic my parents and human siblings are. My mom says that I love “my people” and that I don’t like to be by myself, but to be perfectly honest – I just can’t get enough of them.

I have to tell you about the strangest but most awesome game ever… It’s called Hide and Seek. Here is how the game works: When my family and I go for a hike, my mom will have me stay with her and my human siblings will run down the trails and hide from me. As soon as mom screams "free" I get to take off at full speed to find the kids. It’s like magic, one minute they are there and the next they aren't. Oh, I love Hide and Seek!

Another one of my favorite activities is playing in water and mud. Here are some before and after pictures from one of my mud adventures.

Before playing in the mud: I have to say –I’m a handsome puppy.

After playing in the mud: Although my mom has a look of terror on her face, I know she is really thinking, “Crosby, you’re such a rugged, good-looking son.”

Before I go back to spending time with my family, I have to share some great news. I’m going to the beach for spring break! WOOF! WOOF! I’m so excited to play in the surf, roll around in the sand and make new memories to share with you.

Overall, I have to say the last couple of months have been the most wonderful time in my entire life. I could not have asked for a better family or forever home. I am forever grateful to AGA for making all of my dreams come true. I truly am the luckiest dog.

Today has been a good day! I woke up, stretched, enjoyed some of my tasty dog food and mom even brought me to work with her. However, since the minute we stepped inside the office everyone has been talking about eating tasty hamburgers and hot dogs from YEAH! BURGER. Andy's Awesome New "Dog Cave"

Below is a letter from Andy thanking AGA president, Lauren Genkinger, for matching him with the perfect family. He has also included a couple of photos in his special 'cave'.

Dear Lauren,

I've asked for help sending you a short note - my paws are too big for the keyboard! I'm writing to say "thank you" for matching me with the V family....it is a forever home! I'm still a little shy sometimes, but they understand that I need some time to really relax. But you can tell I look pretty relaxed in my picture.

Can you believe I have my own "dog cave"? It's like a man cave only better! It's a covered porch with all my toys and a comfy sofa.

I love my long walks with "my guy". I'm man-shy, but "my guy" is very patient and just keeps petting and talking sweetly to me. He told his wife that resistance is futile - I'll love him best in 2012! I think he might be right.

My new family has 3 grandchildren who like to play and they treat me very well. Lots of ball throwing, chasing, pats and belly rubs. I also have a beagle "cousin" came to visit Christmas Day and she loved to play too! Finally, there is "my Aunt" who makes me homemade dog treats with natural ingredients. Am I lucky or what?

So thank you for all you do for dogs like me. I tell every dog I meet how wonderful AGA is!

Hieveryone, Shasta here! Just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas andto say thank you again for allowing ME to even have a chance at having anotherChristmas. I am probably leaving some wonderful folks at AGA out of mythanks so I would appreciate it if you would pass them along for me.

Iam so happy to have a Mom and Dad that love me so much (they tell me all thetime) and my very own home. I have learned to hop up onto the couchwhenever I want to and love to stretch out, and I am getting around betterand better. Mom and Dad tell me all the time how beautifulI am and mom calls me her "velveteen rabbit" because she says I amall soft and fuzzy and real.

I wasn't sure what she meant until she readme the following, and I like it now when she calls me her own velveteen rabbitbecause even though I kind of limp sometimes, and I can't hear real well, or myeyes or a little watery, it means I am really, really loved and I amspecial.

The Skin Horsehad lived longer in the nursery than any of the others. He was so old that hisbrown coat was bald in patches and showed the seams underneath, and most of thehairs in his tail had been pulled out to string bead necklaces. He was wise,for he had seen a long succession of mechanical toys arrive to boast andswagger, and by-and-by break their mainsprings and pass away, and he knew thatthey were only toys, and would never turn into anything else. For nursery magicis very strange and wonderful, and only those playthings that are old and wiseand experienced like the Skin Horse understand all about it.

"What is REAL?" asked theRabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender,before Nana came to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzzinside you and a stick-out handle?"

"Real isn't how you aremade," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When achild loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY lovesyou, then you become Real."

"Does it hurt?" asked theRabbit.

"Sometimes," said the SkinHorse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind beinghurt."

"Does it happen all at once, likebeing wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"It doesn't happen all atonce," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That'swhy it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, orwho have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most ofyour hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in thejoints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real youcan't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

"I suppose you arereal?" said the Rabbit. And then he wished he had not said it, for hethought the Skin Horse might be sensitive.

But the Skin Horse only smiled.

Spook-tacular AGA Halloween Pups Go to Wonderful Homes

Three lucky families got some very special treats this Halloween! AGA’s “boo-tiful” Halloween Pups Jack-O-Lantern, Pumpkin, Casper, and Wendy all went to wonderful forever homes this past weekend.

Jack-O-Lantern and Pumpkin, who had already formed a special bond, were both adopted by a terrific family in Atlanta. These adorable pups look so happy with their new Mom and Dad! They are thrilled that they got to stick together, and can’t wait to explore the family mountain house and meet their human siblings.

Wendy, the pistol of the litter, was adopted by a great family who has been anxiously waiting to get a female golden. Wendy has an older golden brother named Stanley, also from AGA, to show her the ropes around her new home! Wonder if Stanley’s what has her attention in the picture?!

Casper found a forever home with his new Mom and her lab mix, Ella, in Greenville, SC. Casper and Ella will be the perfect puppy pair; Ella is very independent and Casper is a bit needier so the dogs should be a good match for each other. Casper’s Mom is a grad student so Casper will get to go to class with her from time to time, what a smart pup!

Max Acworth Is Cruisin' Through Life

AGA orphan Max Acworth is stealing hearts with his perfect doggie manners and lovable personality! He has already won the affection of his foster Mom, and this past weekend he made a new canine companion when he met his foster Grandma's dog, Abbey.

Fast friends, Max and his new pal Abbey enjoyed an afternoon drive in the back seat of the car.

A full day of playing with Abbey must have worn Max out! Time for some beauty rest.

...but Max isn't out for long! After a little cat (or should we say dog?) nap, he is back to playing with his purple bear, one of his favorite toys!

Lady: A Hero to Her Family

Brave AGA golden Lady, recently adopted by a wonderful family from Florida, showed some true courage yesterday. Lady was bitten by a water mocassin in her backyard; the owners are pretty sure she was trying to protect her human siblings from getting too close to the snake!

Thankfully, her owner was on top of the situation and killed the snake and immediately took Lady to the vet. After an overnight stay, she is recovering beautifully and is enjoying being pampered by her loving family.

Lady's snake bite certainly isn't getting in the way of her appetite!

This little Lady deserves all the R&R and pampering in the world after her heroic display yesterday, and it looks like she's getting it!

Snug as a bug in a rug! We are so happy that Lady is on her way to recovery. Her family is very lucky to have her.

A Huge Milestone for AGA and Barney

AGA has reached an important and wonderful milestone! Our 312th dog of the year, Barney, is our 2500th dog saved since we began on October 1, 2003 -- 8 years ago this week and guess what... Barney is 8 years old!

In fact, Barney's date of birth is 10-11-03... ten days after AGA opened for business. Now you must admit, some higher power had a hand in this one!

It is appropriate that Barney is our 2,500th dog. Barney's owner died and he was being kept by a relative who did not want him taken to a shelter. This is the exact reason why we started AGA -- to work with owners who had to give up their goldens, but didn't want to take their golden to a shelter.

Barney's caretakers placed him on Petfinders and one of our volunteers saw him. He is now in our care. Unfortunately, Barney is in pretty bad shape as you can see in his photo. In fact, if ever a dog needed AGA, it is Barney.

Barney has Cushings Disease, which we will treat him for immediately. It simply requires daily meds. Also, he has the following: heart murmur, severe dental disease and a fractured tooth, horribly infected ears, severe arthritis in all limbs, hypothyroid, pendulous abdomen without a palpable mass, diffuse hair lose, scaling, crusting and redness of entire body with extreme leathering of the skin in numerous areas, and severe yeast overgrowth (meaning Barney does not smell like a rose.)

Despite his many medical maladies, his tail has never stopped wagging since we picked him up!

Barney will need our help and we have officially set up theBarney Fund! We know his care will go into the thousands, so what better number to shoot for in donations but $2,500. We will keep you informed.

Barney also needs a foster family to nurse him back to help. Can you help?

Let's give Barney a wonderful 8th year to enjoy! And HAPPY 8TH ANNIVERSARY, AGA!

Message from the President: Not All Vets Are Created Equal

Every month we hear heartbreaking stories about medical misdiagnoses, treatment that was started too late, treatment that didn't work at all and dogs who needlessly suffer while their owners struggle to make financial payments to their vet.

We understand loyalty and that you feel your vet is a good person, but give them one chance to help and then if you don't see improvement in your dog, take your dog to another vet and get a second opinion.

Feel free to contact us about your dog's problem. We have probably had experience with the same problem over the years. We can steer you to a vet who has solved the problem. When it comes to troubles ranging from skin problems to bladder issues to seizures, all vets are not created equal.

Look how much Vanilla (a Golden/Great Pyrenees mix) has grown since she was adopted 2 years ago! It’s hard to believe that Vanilla, once this tiny little pup, is now bigger than all of her Golden siblings!

Say “Cheese!” Have you ever seen such a big smile? Vanilla’s Dad says his happy girl spends her nights sleeping snuggly in the bath tub when she isn’t guarding the foot of her Dad’s bed.

Wellesley’s Mom isn’t the only one ecstatic to have her around; Wellesley’s sister Bunny is pretty excited to have a new playmate too!

Adorable brother and sister Princeton and Sarah (now Colby)Lawrence are so thrilled to be able to stick together as they join their big, happy forever family! Living with their Mom, Dad, three human siblings, and 2 kitties, not to mention they have a pool to splash around in, there will always be something fun for these pups to do!

Yale was adopted this weekend by neighbors of his foster parents, a wonderful retired couple with plenty of time to play with their pup! After losing their 13 year old golden in May, it seems that Yale was just meant to be! Yale is looking forward to meeting his parents’ children, grandchildren, and grandogs; he can’t wait to go to the family’s lake house either!

AGA Fosters Needed: Can You Help?

These last few months have been VERY challenging for our rescue. We have seen so many dogs displaced.

The list of reasons is endless and so heart wrenching: I do not want the responsibility any longer. I cannot afford vet care. I cannot afford food. I do not have time for the dog.

One thing that makes Adopt A Golden Atlanta such an incredible rescue is our foster program. Our rescue is known for taking the needed step of fostering to ensure a successful adoption for the human and dog. People come to AGA because we take the time to place a dog in a foster home and figure out what the dog needs to thrive and be happy.

Guess what? We need help. We need fosters. Many dogs cannot begin their journey to a forever home until they go to a foster. If a foster is not available, dogs are stuck at the vet or stuck in boarding with an undetermined wait time.

Will you help? Fostering a dog is a wonderful gift. If you adopted from us, someone did it for your dog. Someone bridged the gap for your dog between orphan and adoptee. Have you ever thought about it?

We would love to talk to you about being a foster. Give a Golden a little bit of your time…the reward is happiness for so many!!

Finnegan's Got a Home!!!!!

I know you all remember me from the last few adoption days. I sat in front, the strong dark haired gentleman, I'm sure you'll recall {I look like I might have an old classy Southern drawl}.... And everyone passed by me (I'm rather stoic, ah say - that is.... Reserved....) and went straight to the blond haired young bucks that were clambering for attention.....

Well guess what? I'm HOME now!!! My vet says I'm "gorgeous" and everyone says I'm the most handsome man they've ever seen. My family and I are head over heels for each other - and "right at home" in my new house is an understatement. I'm even showing them what an old professional like me can do when those pesky squirrels get in the back yard! I'm loving long naps and I'm velcro on Mom now that I'm home, too. I just knew my family would come one day - so I hung on tight - just for them.

A Bittersweet message for all of her friends. Sweet 16 year old Bibi of Bibi&Yang fame (recent video post if you'll recall -on facebook) - was peacefully taken to the Rainbow Bridge in her sunny backyard with a belly full of treats yesterday after a few months of complicated health problems. She was surrounded by her very dearest friends - her best mate Yang, "adopted son" Andy, and her human mommy. Bibi had a wonderful 16 years and the last few with some really great buddies. Her foster mom couldn't part with Bibi or her friend Yang once she took them in - and they got to live together in Bibi's last years in the lap of luxury and happiness.Thank you to everyone that made this girl's life great! We know she'll be our AGA receptionist at the Golden Gates :)

Keep your pets safe and happy this holiday season. Here are six of the top holiday hazards to watch out for. Happy holidays from all of us at Adopt A Golden Atlanta!

The Christmas Tree

The stagnant water in the tree stand may contain fertilizers and is a breeding ground for bacteria which will cause stomach upset if your dog drinks it .Also every Christmas, the ER is full of dogs having surgery to remove ornaments and lights from their stomachs.

Food

We all know not to feed our dogs chocolate, grapes, raisins and anything sweetened with xylitol, but be aware of the lengths to which an enterprising Golden will go to chomp on something yummy? Make sure to keep your pets away from the table and unattended plates of food, and be sure to secure the lids on garbage cans and leave the leftovers for the humans. NO HUMAN FOOD OR ALCOHOL.

Medications

Caution houseguests to keep medications behind closed doors.

Plants

Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems.

Batteries

Punctured batteries can cause severe burns to the mouth and esophagus.

Hustle and Bustle

Dogs are lost every year at Christmas and New Year’s when doors and gates are accidently left open. Be sure your dog has his collar with contact info tags on AT ALL TIMES. If your dog should be lost, remember to call AGA immediately. Consider providing your dog with a quiet separate room away from the hubbub.

Effective immediately, all AGA orphans who are 10 years of age or older will be adopted to senior citizens (people 65 years +) at no charge. We recognize how very special seniors are – both the human and dog variety – and we want to encourage adoptions by seniors who may be on a fixed income but would love the companionship of a senior golden. It’s a win-win for both dog and person.

If you have ever had the pleasure of owning a senior golden, you know how very special they are. We’ve all seen the horrible pictures and heard about the terrible oil spill down in the Gulf of Mexico recently. Did you know your beautiful Golden Retriever could aid in the recovery process? It’s simple!

We all know our pups shed quite a bit – just collect any pet fur you can and it can be used to help sop up all that oil! Donations are being accepted by AGA member Lisa – just contact her at lisa@lisagleim.com.

She can take donations until Thursday night, so get to brushing! After that deadline, it can also be mailed down to the Gulf. Pantyhose/ nylons are also welcome donations to help with the recovery.

Did you know it's National Pet Week? We know, every week is Pet Week when you truly love your pet, but it's still a good chance to reflect and think about all the ways we care for our golden pals.

Our friends at Iams have sent some great tips on how to keep your golden friend happy and healthy for the current and upcoming seasons, and we thought we'd share some of them. You can also click on the link below to get a $5 coupon towards supplements from Iams for your best furry friend!
• Keep your pet’s safety in mind while you’re spring cleaning. While you’re refreshing the home for the spring season it’s also a great time to clear out any easy-to-reach cabinets and store all household chemicals – cleaners, dishwashing and laundry detergents, insecticides and mothballs which can be hazardous to your pet in locked cabinets or high shelves.
• With gardening season in bloom, be aware of the plants that can be toxic to your pets and keep them out of their reach. Some common plants that are potentially harmful to pets include geraniums, lilies, English ivy and daffodils.
• Summer time weather also means more road trips and opportunities to bond with your pet. When packing for a trip with your pet, don’t forget the following items:
o Your Vet’s documents for your pet
o Your pet should be wearing a collar with your information on it
o Extra sheets or an old blanket
o Water and your pet’s food and dish.
o Toy/ball/leash
o Waste removal bags
Below are simple preventative measures for pet parents to take throughout the year:
• Heartworm – heartworm is caused by mosquitoes and can be fatal for our pooches. The spring season is a major time for heartworm because of the weather warming up and the mosquitoes becoming more active. There are many products out on the market that can prevent this. Check with your vet to find out which one is right for your dog.
• Fleas and ticks – fleas and tickets can be tiny but they spread and grow quickly once they find a host. In order to prevent fleas and ticks, pet owners should apply a repellant to their pet’s coat and home in the early spring months.
• Lawn fertilizers and other pesticides – as pet owners start to restore their lawn they must remember that lawn fertilizers and other pesticides used are very toxic to pets. After applying these chemicals, pet owners should follow manufacturer instructions on how long they should wait before allowing their pet into the area.
• Allergies – pets may also suffer from seasonal allergies, just like humans. Know the signs and how to soothe your tormented pet. Constant paw licking, body rubbing, excessive scratching, hair loss, odor, skin rashes, and a “flaky” or “greasy” feeling coat are all symptoms of allergies.
• Exercise your pet on a daily basis. If need be, hire a pet care agency. A mid-day walk or visit reduces stress and promotes a healthy pet.
• Always supply plenty of fresh water each day. Monitor your pet’s water bowl and adjust size as needed.
• Give your pet extra nutrition with supplements such as Iams Premium Protection Supplements. Supplements can help address life stage, lifestyle and breed-specific concerns related to size, weight, age, and activity level and provide extra nutrition to help keep your pet healthy.

My last job was to have puppies. I did it for 6 years. A lot. The last time I only had 4 puppies so my boss fired me. In the puppy breeding business that means I got dropped off at an animal shelter. Thank goodness AGA came and got me - whew!! They told me to keep my furry little head held high. They said not to feel bad about losing my old job because, in fact, it was a crappy job and there is a much better life out there. Sounded good to me!

And they were right!!! I went to live with a foster family. They pampered me - I got my very own "fresh start makeover"...grooming, a spay appointment, shopping! I really liked these people but I knew it was just temporary. And then the best thing happened on my 6th birthday this past Sunday. My fosters decided to adopt me! My birthday present that day was a brand new red heart shaped “Annie” tag for my collar. It's official - I'm now part of a true forever family! The best birthday EVER.

I know y'all are golden retriever lovers and so am I! My best friend Alfie is a golden. We have been pretty much living on the streets together until AGA found us in a subdivision and offered us a ride to a better life. Of course, Alfie found a foster home right away and off he went. Becaue I'm a chocolate lab mix, I wasn't quite as popular, I guess. I swear I'm a really good 1-year-old boy and not too big - about 45 pounds. I'd LOVE to see Alfie again and maybe go live with him and a new family who wants us both. But if not, I hope someone will find me a loving family of my very own. They say I need some confidence building and knowledge that I am safe now. I guess that's true. So the best home is one with another dog and either no kids or kids that are teens or older. If the family wants both Alfie and me, AGA is not going to charge an adoption fee for me - yippee!! It's like a two-for-one! But, if it's just me they are still making a deal - half the standard fee for a dog my age ($175). I'm up to date on all vaccines. Maybe there's room in your heart for a fellow golden lover who happens to be a lab? I hope so!!

Clearly, I have a way with the ladies. This Thrashers girl was soooooo nice!

A bunch of us goldens and our parents went out to watch a little ice hockey and raise some money for AGA. I had a fantastic time! It was easy getting people to buy raffle tickets from me- I just turned on the charm! In addition to money they gave me lots of snuggles, pats, chats and love.

I also got to watch the game from the stands! Shout out to the Budweiser beer guy who gave me 2 cups of ice to crunch. I made sure to show my appreciation by keeping the area around our seats nice and clean of any stray popcorn.

Hi AGA,

Thanks for my forever family! Every day my Mom & Dad tell me how beautiful I am and that I am a very good girl. The last seven months have been great. I also have three older brothers - who I love. I get so excited when they come and visit me. My brothers say that I am crazy – but, good crazy. Every night, I wait in my bed for my Mom & Dad to fall asleep, and then I quietly jump into their bed and snuggle with my Daddy – What could be better? – Nothing!!!

I am so happy - I am also an AGA volunteer! I help other Orphans, like I was – who need guidance and support as they search for their forever families. Tillie (formerly Gucci), Ben and Ginger came and stayed with me as they looked for their forever families. I helped them find great homes. Tillie was only with us for a short time – she was a lot of fun – she was my first foster sissy. Then came Ben. Ben was so smart (and handsome too!). One time he ate a whole bag of rolls – and he didn’t even get in trouble – I call that smart! Ginger helped me learn to share – she slept in my bed and played with my toys – and I was okay with it, I knew it would help her become Golden like me. I can’t wait to meet my next foster sister or brother.

I have also visited many families and it was my job to give my paw of approval and make sure it would be a great home for one of my Golden friends.

This week I am going to the Thrasher Game to sell raffle tickets – Dad & I will have a lot of fun.

I am proud to be an AGA Alumnus & Volunteer!
