Star 94's Petapalooza

Well, here we all are at Star 94's Petapalooza last weekend. What a neat opportunity for AGA!
We looked great with our fabulous new tent, raised good money in merchandise sales and donations, and had many, many visitors wanting more information. At times, there were people 2 and 3 rows deep at our tent. Lots of petting going on!

There were probably 50 booths there -- food, rescues, pet related vendors and others. Several thousand people and their dogs attended throughout the day. We had a phenomenal location, right in the center fairway and were easy to spot with our tent. We had adoptees visit and actually, it seemed like anyone with a golden stopped by also. We met lots of cousins!
A special thanks to Sharon Nicolson and all the volunteers who helped. We were, well, dog-tired by the end of the day.

We love our new baby!

Dear Friends at Adopt a Golden-

We just wanted to share our exciting news that our little brother, John Harrison Riley "Harrison", was born last Friday April 25th! He was a big boy at 9 pounds 4 ounces and 22" long, which is all the better so he will be ready to play with us soon! We couldn't resist sharing a picture of us taking our brother for a walk and then a much needed nap afterwards...we try to be as close to him as possible at all times, Beau even tried to sleep with him in his little bed! As expected, we are the perfect Golden big brother and sister, very gentle and protective of our new little one. Look forward to introducing him to everyone at an adoption day soon! Love, Beau and Sadie Riley

New Puppy Orphan!

Hi y'all! My name is Romy and I'm an 8-10 week old girl golden puppy. I was born in Rome, GA and the family there asked the animal control folks to come get me. No reason. Obviously they saw how cute I was and wanted to be sure that AGA got me!!!! I'm a total sweetie and can't wait to meet my new family! They say I just have to get a vet check-up and then I can start meeting people. Yippee!!!

Great Reunion Story!

I was a "stray" picked up by Cobb County Animal Control on March 4 near Pope High School. The County was pretty sure they knew who my grandmom was and called her, but she doesn' speak English so well and didn't understand. So, off I went to the shelter and then to an AGA foster home where they started calling me "Dempsey." Whatever.
Cobb County gave AGA my grandmother's name and telephone number and they tried to reach her but she did not return the call. A few weeks later AGA received an email from a young girl named Sally who said her dog, Toby (ME!!!!), had been missing from her mother's home since March 4. She described me to a tee. AGA realized that their orphan Dempsey was really Sally's Toby (ME!!!!). My mom is living in Seattle and that's why I've been staying with her mom.
AGA found out that my mom Sally had been looking everywhere for me - putting ads on Craigslist and had called all the shelters. The shelters told her that Goldens get turned over to AGA and that is how I was found. Lemme tell you, when AGA picked me up from my foster mom's house and drove me home, it was one of the happiest days of my life! My grandmom started to cry she was so happy.
AGA thinks that one of the best parts of this story is finding out that I'm 14 1/2 years old. They thought I was much younger (ahem, thank you). And they loved finding out that I had been on a strict diet of Tofu, soy sauce and brown rice my entire life! It was good to get back to my usual food, but I didn't really mind those Milkbone treats and rawhides too much.
That's my story. AGA is the best. Who knows what would have happened to me if they weren't there? THANK YOU.

Why did my dad leave me?

My name is Trout and I'm a 12 year old male golden retriever. My dad got me when I was 6 weeks old and we've had a wonderful life! My mom recently had a baby and said I had to go. I really don't know why - I'm a real sweetheart and would never hurt the baby. She said it was too much trouble having a baby and a dog. So my dad took me to a shelter. I overheard the worker there telling dad that I would probably not get adopted and would be, well, killed. He was crying but he said he didn't have a choice. AND HE LEFT! I will never get that.

But this story is on its way to a happy ending. The good shelter people knew who to call: Adopt A Golden Atlanta. They were there within one hour and I was in a foster home right away. I'm told that I certainly don't act 12 years old. I am playful and love affection. I am house broken (of course!) and know some basic commands like sit. My tail wags pretty much non-stop and when I get really excited it twirls like a helicopter blade. I love other dogs and children. I'm great on the leash. I see and hear just fine. All I really need is a new family to love. I hope I get that soon!!

The lady at AGA told me about an Indian legend that says: "When a human dies there is a bridge they must cross to enter into Heaven. At the head of the bridge waits every animal that human encountered during their lifetime. The animals, based on what they know of each person, decide which humans may cross the bridge...and which are turned away."

Hmmmm. What will I do when I see my dad?

Pooh Bear Princess??

Hi, I'm Pooh Bear (I'm a guy) and my mom and my sister Kate made me dress up as a princess! What were they thinking? Kate turned 3 and all a the sudden I'm supposed to be a princess?? But, it was kind of fun, she had all her princess friends and they all treated me like--well, a princess!!! A princess for a day, who's complaining?

Bella Lives the Good Life ... Now!

This is Bella here (I used to be called Butterscotch). I had a pretty tough time before the people of Adopt A Golden found me. I was scared a lot of the time and liked to hang out in my crate where I felt safe. But a great thing happened to me! I found my Forever Family and they have loved me into being a strong, silly and loving girl. I LOVE life. I go on walks every day and my job is to be the family comedian. Every day I do silly (and sometimes mischievious) things to make my Forever Family laugh. I always get lots of love and treats from my very own two kids, Patrick and Elizabeth, and my Dad. I have so many friends in my neighborhood! I like to to outside to bark and say hi. My new family includes a dog named Max who is my best dog pal and (ssshhhh) I totally have my mom wrappped around my paw! Life is good!

Thank you Adopt A Golden for changing my life!

Hugs and licks,
Bella

Retractable Leashes are Dangerous!

Yeah, they seem pretty cool. And convenient. But the fact is that they are dangerous to people and pups! My name is Rusty and I just returned home after being lost for almost 2 days. My loving family had a retractable leash on me and accidentally dropped it when we went out for a walk on Monday. It was LOUD! I'll admit I'm easily spooked, but a lot of rescue dogs are. I freaked and took off running and that thing kept chasing me!!! It was scary. I'm lucky that I found my way home early this morning.

One of my golden pals was also on a retractable leash one day and when his mom dropped hers she reached down to get it and it swirled up and cut the tip of her finger off - ouch!!! And lots of us have seen our people get tangled up in them, ending up with rope burns and stuff.

So, Adopt A Golden has asked me to tell everyone to stop using these!! Gotta go catch up on my sleep now.

Truffles Moves to Pennsylvania and Becomes a Dutchess!

Here I am with my new Mom and Dad! They live in Pennsylvania, wherever that is. I understand it's to be a long ride home, but as long as I'm with these nice people I'll go anywhere! They have had other furry golden children all their life and they have a person son named Peter who, along with Elizabeth, do a lot of work for AGA. So, they decided to get their next gold child from Atlanta - and that's when I got lucky! They drove all the way here to get me!
I have a new name - Dutchess. Doesn't that sound so, well, regal? I like it a lot and plan to live up to it if you know what I mean.
I'll write back soon. Apparently I'm going to be going boating - anyone know what that is? It sounds like a blast! Wish me well!! I'll send pix.

Nutmeg Gets a Family!

I was adopted at AGA Adoption Day today!!! My new mom and dad are sooooooo nice and I know I am going to be so happy living with them. I am a 5 year old purebred female golden who AGA rescued from a Missouri puppy mill breeder. All my life my job was to have puppies, sometimes 3 litters a year. Whew! That was a lot of work. When AGA got me, they made sure I wouldn't have any more puppies and they fixed the inverted eye lash problem I had. I don't exactly know what that means but I know that my eyes don't water anymore.

I simply cannot believe that I will have my very own real, fluffy bed and toys and love. I can be kind of shy because I'm not used to all this love and attention, but I've got a good feeling about these people. I'm pretty sure they are going to be the BEST thing that ever happened in my life. And guess what? My new mom is head of a group called Happy Tails and she said I can be a therapy dog and help lots of people!!!

Thank you to AGA for saving me. And thank you to those who make donations to AGA. It's people like you who allow them to take care of my eyes and my spay.

Snow is SO Cool!

Hey, Orwell here! Read my story in the adoptees section and you'll see that things were looking pretty bad for me. But now everything's wonderful! No one can believe how great I look and feel. I don't know what the big deal is - all I needed was LOVE. And boy, did I get that. Yippee!!
The other day, the weirdest thing happened. White stuff started coming out of the sky! And it was wet! It took me a while to figure out that I need to close my eyes but it was so fun watching it come down. That's my sis Cali in the photo top right - she loved it too.

A Get-Well Card for Rocky

You might not think an orphan dog with a bad leg would feel lucky, but I sure do!!! I was lucky to meet Adopt A Golden Atlanta and even more lucky that Katherine Hawkins fell in love with my picture. She has done so much to raise money for my operation (it costs $2000!!) - and she's only 8 years old!! Read about it on her aunt's blog http://o-my-goodness.livejournal.com/She gave her allowance, sold baked goods, went door to door, all for ME - wow! Maybe she'll even let me come live with her (hint, hint). Everyone has been so nice to be sure I get well and live a long, happy life. I just want to say thanks - to Katherine and to everyone. You can read my whole story here.http://www.adoptagoldenatlanta.com/

Insight from Bentley

"Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring – it was peace."

Otis before and after

Hey there,
Otis here. I owe everyone at Adopt A Golden Atlanta a huge thanks! When I was first turned in to the local shelter I was in pretty bad shape. I weighed 58 pounds, had heart worms and a bad skin condition (the photo says it all). AGA volunteers helped to give me all the medical attention and love I needed. My foster family took me in and soon adopted me. I was just too irresistible! They are now my forever parents and I couldn't be happier. I'm not the only adoptee in the family. Mom and Dad adopted my sister from China this summer. When she first started walking, I got to help! I would sit really still and she would hold on to me for balance. I also have a brother, Cosmo. He's a golden like me. My forever family is the greatest and I owe it all to AGA. Thanks everyone!
Otis

Can I come live with you?

My name is Buffy and I'm a 7 year old female golden who was abandoned by my owners. I lived with my family all my life in the backyard in an igloo dog house. I never left even though there wasn't a fence to keep me there. One day my family left and didn't take me. I really miss the two children. I had lots and lots of ticks and the vet had to shave my coat. But now it's grown back and everyone says it is soft and beautiful. I'm very happy in my foster home and I've really learned what love is all about. No more igloo dog houses -- only comfy beds. I have a little arthritis, but I still enjoy strolling through the woods and going on short walks. I get along with other dogs and just need a quiet home where I'll get plenty of tummy rubs. I would love a little girl to play dress up and princess with. And if it's not asking too much, a home without a lot of stairs would be best.

I have a golden heart, too

As you can see, I am not a golden on the outside, but here I am with my foster brother Toby that was an AGA dog and he came to stay with us for a while (I tired him out I guess) - he was a golden inside, too, even though he was a flat coat retriever on the outside :o) My mama says I am a test dog for AGA dogs that might have dog aggression - not sure what that means really but I get to meet alot of goldens at Pet Lodge. Sometimes I get jealous when she walks them every day and goes right past my day care kennel but I know she is helping them. My pa did not want another golden right away after their golden died last Thanksgiving so they rescued me (thankfully for me). Have a happy day - Sasha Vom Lebemshunger Shields
